Who makes Lotus Cat Food?

Lotus Pet Food was created by the owners of Centinela Feed and Pet, a pet retail store in Los Angeles, California.

As the owners of a pet retail store, the future founders noticed a disturbing trend. Repeatedly over the years, pet food manufacturers sacrificed food quality in favor of more cost-effective ingredients and manufacturing processes. Knowing how much they and their customers valued high-quality nutrition for dogs and cats, they decided to make their own cat and dog food brand.

The Lotus Pet Food company started with several principles in mind. First of all, they were committed to using high-quality ingredients in their authentic, minimally-processed form. Secondly, their dry food would never pass through an extruder. Instead, they would employ a slow oven baking process to help keep the nutritional value of the food intact.

The first Lotus dog food product touched store shelves in 2003. In 2011, Lotus opened a micro-cannery, where they manufacture canned food for dogs and cats.

What types of cat food does Lotus offer?

Lotus creates both dry and wet food for cats.

All Lotus kibble is oven-baked. The baking process, which takes about three times as long as extrusion, allows the kibble to contain up to twice as much meat as an extruded food. The baking process also allows the food to retain more natural vitamins, minerals, and proteins.

With the exception of a grain-free duck formula, all Lotus dry foods are made with whole grains.

Lotus recipes are always free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives, including BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin. To ensure that the foods are free from potentially harmful preservatives, the company investigates all suppliers and only buys from those who don't use these questionable additives.

Additionally, Lotus canned formulas don't contain xanthan gum, guar gum, or carrageenan.

All ingredients are sourced in the United States and Canada, except for New Zealand green-lipped mussel, deboned lamb, and lamb meal from New Zealand. Most of the chicken used in the recipes is raised in California, but animal proteins may occasionally be sourced from other US states or US coastal waters.

Lotus dry cat food recipes are baked in small batches in a Canadian bakery, while their canned foods are manufactured in the company's own California micro-cannery.

Lotus Cat Food Reviews

On Chewy, the Just Juicy Chicken Stew canned cat food formula has 31 reviews, earning it a 4.2 out of 5 star rating. 90% of reviewers say they'd recommend the product.

Here's what four real customers have to say about it:

Positive Reviews

"The kitties love this food and I love that it has quality ingredients. It is a little spendy but the cats always eat everything on their plate so nothing goes to waste. Ive also noticed their skin (they are all sphynx) is a lot more soft and smooth. All around its a great product." – Michaela

"Our cat regurgitated / vomited her food every two to three days consistently for three years. We tried Pepcid, antibiotics and a vet prescribed food (rabbit based). The Lotus Just Juicy chicken stew was a game changer. Our cat loves it and along with a holistic hair ball pill, Lotus solved the constant regurgitation problem." – Terry15

Negative Reviews

"My cats did not like this food at all. It looked pretty good to me! I don't know if I can say there is something wrong with the food–I mean I'm not a cat but it may just be their personality though they do like chicken generally. I have 4 cats and all 4 would not eat. I tried several different cans. So my rating is probably not fair but this was my experience–sorry!" – Vicki

"One of my cats loved the broth but wouldn't eat much of the chicken. The other cat wouldn't have anything to do with any of it. This is typical behavior for both of my cats. If you have a cat who loves human food, they will probably like this. If your cat doesn't like human food, this probably won't change their mind. I was hoping it would change the mind of Miss "give me the dry cardboard tasting stuff" …but no luck." – Lola2

Lotus Just Juicy Chicken Stew Grain-Free Canned Cat Food Review

First 5 Ingredients: Chicken, Chicken Broth, Potato Starch, Calcium Lactate, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid)

All canned foods in the Just Juicy line are moisture-packed formulas featuring hand-packed USDA inspected and passed meat, along with a species-appropriate concentration of water, traces of vegetables, and enough added vitamins and minerals to make each meal complete.

This simple chicken-based recipe starts with chicken and chicken broth. Like all Lotus foods, this food avoids typical thickeners like carrageenan, xanthan gum, and guar gum. Instead, the broth is thickened with potato starch and agar-agar. Added chicken fat is an optimal source of essential fatty acids and energy.

Added carrots are a natural source of several vitamins and minerals, but the recipe primarily relies on synthetic supplements to achieve nutritional completeness. The company highlights the inclusion of taurine, an amino acid that all cats require to stay healthy, and vitamin E to support a robust immune system.

Overall, this is a moisture-rich, meat-based canned cat food. Canned foods in gravy typically contain more starch than do pates, and with potato starch as the third ingredient on the list, this food may be more high-carb than some would like.

This product looks like "real" food, with textured chicken shreds and visible chunks of carrots in gravy.

The guaranteed analysis ensures that the food is at least 13% protein, 3% fat, 4% carbohydrates, and contains at most 78% moisture.

Considering that there are no considerable sources of plant protein in this recipe, we can assume that all or most of the protein comes from species-appropriate animal protein.

According to Lotus feeding guidelines, this food could cost over $2.79 each day, making it one of the most expensive canned foods on the market.

This cost estimate is based on Chewy prices and excludes shipping costs.
